Think of the Yoti Digital ID like a Swiss Army knife – compact, versatile and ready for just about anything. It’s more than just a way to prove who you are; it’s a powerful, multi-use digital identity that fits in your pocket.

Whether you’re proving your age, verifying your identity or securely swapping details with another person, the Yoti app brings everything together in one place. It’s a single, secure app packed with features designed to simplify your life, protect your privacy and give you control over your personal information.

Key features

  • Privacy-preserving – share only the details you choose
  • Works seamlessly on both iOS and Android
  • Verified student status
  • Peer-to-peer checks for safe buying/selling, dating, or meeting someone new
  • Private proof of age for age-restricted content, goods and services
  • Verified proof of identity
  • Higher security – keeping your details safe

Lets explore some of our favourite features in more detail:

Privacy-preserving by design

Your personal information is yours – and with Yoti, it stays that way.

The Yoti Digital ID is built with privacy at its core. You’re always in control of what you share, and who you share it with. Whether you’re proving your age, identity or something else entirely, you decide which details to reveal – and keep the rest private.

This means you can share your age group, such as 18+, without disclosing any other personal information. This is particularly useful when you need to prove your age online to access age-restricted content or websites, or when buying age-restricted goods.

The ability to only share the necessary information also makes this safer than using a physical identity document. Think about when you use a driving licence to prove your age, let’s say in a bar or nightclub. You aren’t just showing your date of birth. You’re also revealing details like your full name and home address.

The way we’ve built the app means there is no tracking of how you’re using your Digital ID or who you have shared your details with. That’s for your eyes only. When you use the app to prove your age or identity online, it is not linking your browsing habits or online behaviour. It simply shares the information requested by that website – and you always consent to share that information.

Peer to peer checks – build trust with other people

Our Digital ID has a unique feature; you can share verified information with other people to help create trust when it matters most.

This is useful for any situation where you might want more confidence or certainty about who someone is – for example if you’re talking to someone on a dating app, buying or selling something to someone online, or looking for a tradesperson.

In a world where anyone can hide behind a fake profile online or give false information, swapping verified details, like name and photo, through the Yoti app helps you feel confident about who you’re really speaking to.

We’ve always been proud of this feature, giving people a simple but effective tool to protect them from the risks of romance fraud, scammers, fake profiles and catfishing.

Private proof of age – no oversharing needed

With Yoti, you only ever share the details you need – and nothing more. Yoti lets you prove you are over a certain age without ever sharing your full date of birth. You can simply share an age group, such as “18+” or “21+”, depending on what’s required. It’s quick, secure and privacy-friendly.

You can use this in a variety of ways:

  • Online – to access age-restricted content, platforms and services. You may notice that you’re being asked to prove your age more often online. This could be when you’re signing up for new streaming services, buying something online, making a new social media account or trying to access adult content. This is due to new laws coming into effect, including the UK’s Online Safety Act. This rules that ticking a box saying “I’m over 18” is no longer good enough to keep children safe online.
  • In person – when entering a venue, watching an age-restricted film or purchasing other age-restricted goods or services. Soon you’ll also be able to use the app when buying alcohol. This will give you an easier, safer and more secure way to prove your age when buying alcohol in high street pubs, supermarkets, convenience stores, nightclubs, pubs and bars.

To use your Digital ID to prove your age, either online or in person, you’ll need to add an identity document, like a passport or driving licence. This is so we can verify your age against an official record. You only need to do this once though; once verified, you can prove your age – and only your age – quickly and easily with the app. You can do this anytime you need to prove your age, with any business or website who accepts Yoti.

If you don’t have an identity document, or don’t wish to add this to the app, you can have your age estimated instead with facial age estimation. Because the age estimation is completed on your Digital ID app, no data ever leaves your device when sharing the age estimation result.

Verified proof of identity

You can also use your Digital ID to prove your identity.

The flexibility to share different information depending on the situation is one of the main benefits of reusable digital IDs. They are not limited to one particular use case.

Need to complete a right to work check for a new job? Or show proof of identity to collect a parcel? Everything you need is at your fingertips, so you can complete any required identity checks anytime, anywhere – whether you’re commuting home or sitting on your sofa.

Say goodbye to completing long forms or using an identity document every time, saving you time and effort.

Lots of us no longer carry a purse or wallet and instead use our phones to pay for things. So being able to prove your identity from your phone is the next logical step.

Student status – smarter, simpler student verification

Instead of carrying a physical student card, students can share a verified Student ID from their Digital ID app. It shows only the essential information, such as their photo, university email and verified student status, giving businesses the confirmation they need, and students the privacy and convenience they deserve.

Students get a secure, digital alternative to paper or plastic ID, and businesses receive trusted proof of student status.

Higher security – keeping your details safe

The Yoti Digital ID integrates multiple layers of protection to keep your personal information secure. These include:

  • End-to-end encryption of your data
  • Biometric authentication (e.g. Face ID or fingerprint)
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) – which asks you to complete multiple verification checks, such as entering a password and a one-time passcode.

These features provide an added layer of security that physical IDs cannot. However, if you suspect that someone may have gained access to your Digital ID, you can instantly lock or suspend it, and update your security credentials – all from your device.

Identity verification: the facts

It’s becoming increasingly essential to check that users are who they say they are. The rise in cyber attacks, data breaches and online financial crime has pushed companies across multiple industries to adopt more reliable and advanced verification methods. As a result, identity verification has become a crucial part of securing online transactions and interactions. It helps reduce identity theft, protect sensitive data and allows businesses to comply with regulations.  We believe people and businesses should make up their own minds about whether they’d like to use our identity verification technology – based on the facts. Digital ID for the Online Safety Act: effective, private, reusable

For years, we’ve helped businesses carry out millions of age checks – particularly using our facial age estimation technology, which offers a quick, privacy-preserving way to estimate someone’s age without collecting personal details. But since the UK Online Safety Act came into force on 25th July, we’ve seen growing demand for our Digital ID. More people are choosing it as a secure and privacy-preserving way to prove their age online. In fact, when the Online Safety Act came in, Yoti was the second most popular app in the App Store.  Whether it’s to access age-restricted content or platforms, people
