London, UK – 31st August 2025 – UK-based digital identity company, Yoti, has today been recognised as one of the leading providers in Australia’s national Age Assurance Technology Trial (AATT) benchmarking, demonstrating exceptional performance in privacy, usability and accuracy for both age verification and age estimation. The independent evaluation highlights Yoti’s commitment to balancing user privacy with robust assurance, confirming Yoti’s technology as one of the most privacy-forward solutions in the trial.
Privacy by design and international standards compliance
Yoti’s systems for age verification and age estimation demonstrated accuracy levels suitable for real-world application, meeting the highest Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 9 rating, even for age thresholds younger than 18.
Yoti passed every functional test and was commended for interoperability, robustness and embedding privacy into every stage of the age assurance process.
Lab testing for Yoti’s age verification approaches confirmed full functionality and robustness across scenarios, including spoof attempts, expired and blurred IDs and cross-border documents.
Yoti age verification and age estimation approaches demonstrated:
- All checks are data minimised
- Full compliance with privacy standards
Yoti’s approaches ensure users’ personal information remains secure and private, reinforcing Yoti’s reputation as a leader in privacy innovation.
Exceptional accuracy and reliability
Independent lab testing confirmed Yoti’s facial age estimation solution as highly accurate and consistent, with:
- True Positive Rates above 94% for age gates of 13 and 16
- Mean Absolute Error (MAE) under 2 years for users aged between 13 and 20
- Strong performance for an age gate of 18, with consistently low error rates
- Inclusive for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders
Positive user experience
Mystery shopper trials and school testing demonstrated that Yoti’s facial age estimation technology was not only secure and accurate, but also user-friendly:
- 92% of participants completed tasks without issues
- 92% rated the system easy or very easy to use
- 80% were satisfied or very satisfied with their experience
- 95.8% had no privacy concerns
- High levels of confidence in accuracy
Age verification mystery shoppers showed 100% accuracy, though on a small sample.
Addressing bias and fairness
The evaluation of facial age estimation acknowledged variations in performance across skin tone groups (V–VI) but confirmed this did not equate to bias, and in some cases, accuracy was higher for these groups. This reinforces Yoti’s commitment to fairness and ongoing optimisation of its models.
A balanced, trusted solution
Yoti’s technology outperformed many systems in overall accuracy and consistency. The comprehensive evaluation confirmed Yoti’s solution is production-ready, highly usable and designed with privacy at its core.
Julie Dawson, Yoti’s Chief Regulatory & Policy Officer said, “Yoti has always believed that age assurance can be both privacy-preserving and highly accurate. This benchmarking shows that we can enable age-appropriate experiences to allow young people to thrive online without compromising their privacy or security. We applaud the trial’s transparency and commend the Australian government for undertaking this comprehensive study and taking decisive action to support and protect citizens online. Australia has a unique opportunity to learn from the benchmarking exercise and build a world-leading framework. Success requires more than just mandating age checks, it demands robust standards, consistent enforcement and strong international coordination through bodies like the Global Online Safety Regulators Network.
We hope that the Australian regulator will establish clear and enforceable minimum standards and define age assurance guidance with granular specificity, including non-negotiable technical requirements spanning:
- Performance thresholds
- Technical standards
- Security requirements
- Core features such as liveness detection, face matching, document authenticity checks and injection detection
- Independent certification to ensure consistent quality across the ecosystem.”
Robin Tombs, CEO of Yoti added, “This recognition underscores our leadership in providing privacy-first solutions that enable age appropriate experiences supporting young people to thrive online. We commend the Australian Government for its transparent, comprehensive approach to this study. The country has a unique opportunity to build a world-leading regulatory framework, one that sets clear minimum standards for performance, security and core features such as liveness detection, injection detection and document authenticity checks. Independent certification and strong international coordination through networks like the Global Online Safety Regulators Network will be vital to ensuring trust and safety online.”
